Scoliosis Treatment at Divine Spine
A gentle and precise relief from Scoliosis
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is defined as abnormal sideways curves of the spine. Do you picture an old-time sienna-tinted photo of a visibly deformed spine that requires a brace? While this can be the case, many people have less severe cases that may go undetected until the sideways curves cause issues.
Exploring Different Types of Scoliosis
Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common and shows up in otherwise healthy children without a known cause. It may be mild or severe and should be monitored to see if it progresses with age.
Congenital Scoliosis happens when the spine doesn’t develop as it should during pregnancy.
Neuromuscular Scoliosis results from nerve and muscle damage from an injury or condition such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy.
How Can You Tell? Symptoms of Scoliosis
Do this simple posture check:
- Stand in front of a mirror, or have the person you are checking stand in facing you. Take a deep breath and relax, standing naturally with your hands by your sides.
- Look at the shoulders. Is one higher than the other?
- Look at the waistline. Is it even, or does one hip appear to be higher?
- Turn to the side. Is one side of the rib cage jutting forward?
- You’ll need a partner for the next part. Does one shoulder blade appear more prominent than the other? When you bend forward, is one side of the back more prominent?
Symptoms of dysfunction correlating to scoliosis may include:
- Weak core muscles
- Chronic back pain or stiffness in the back
- Leg pain, numbness, or weakness
- Difficulty maintaining an upright posture
- Breathing issues
Suppose you have concerns about whether you or your child may have scoliosis. In that case, you should be checked by a chiropractor, as we specialize in caring for the musculoskeletal system, especially as it interacts with the nervous system.
There is an entire spectrum of scoliosis; it’s more complicated than “you have it or you don’t.”
With most scoliosis cases, the spine will rotate or twist in addition to the sideways curve, so assessing the 3D nature of scoliosis with a basic posture check is impossible. Scoliosis may affect the rib cage, trunk symmetry, and, most importantly, the surrounding nerves of the spinal cord.
With X-rays, healthcare professionals can measure the degree of severity and monitor the spine to see if the curves worsen with age. It is generally considered scoliosis if the degree of the sideways curve is over 10%.
Ideally, scoliosis is detected and monitored in childhood. Pediatric chiropractic is a wonderful way to support growth and development before years of poor posture and degeneration set postural and neurological patterns.
However, many adults don’t realize that their chronic back pain may be due to a structural issue with mild scoliosis. While it isn’t possible to turn back the clock, it is essential to address misalignments, as they not only cause pain but can reduce the motion of the joint and interfere with the function of surrounding nerves.
The Ripple Effect: Scoliosis and Whole-Body Health
Structure dictates function. Scoliosis can affect overall wellness in some unexpected ways.
There’s a deep connection between spinal alignment and organ function, as the spine protects the spinal cord, and the nerve roots exit between the vertebrae. The nerves bring signals from the brain to the organ and carry messages back from the organs to inform the brain.
When the vertebrae are misaligned, it can cause or contribute to pressure and inflammation that reduce the nerve flow.
This is why, in more severe cases of scoliosis, there may be an impact on breathing and lung function. The sideways curves of the spine and shift of the ribcage can compress the lungs and irritate the nerves that control their movement and function.
Depending on the location of the scoliosis, you may also experience digestive issues if there’s inflammation or irritation to the nerves of the gut.
